You’ve probably heard before that Lorne has 10 waterfalls within 10kms…but have you seen them all? There has never been a better time to discover (or rediscover) their splendour.
While you’re at it, here’s another 10 activities that we love doing too.
What’s more mesmerising? Gazing over a waterfall at eye-level or sizing it up from below? If you can’t decide, don’t worry, at Erskine Falls you can do both. Tumbling 30 metres down a rocky face in a fern-filled rainforest setting, Erskine Falls drips with natural charm.
From the car park, 150 metres gets you to the first lookout platform where you can soak up the cascade in all its splendour. For the second act, trek 200-plus steps down deep into the gully for a worm’s eye view of the splash pool and falls.
Local tip: Winter is the best time to see these stunning falls!
Kalmina Falls is a two for one deal, with the lower and upper sections at just an easy 3km walk through the Otways. Lower Kalimna Falls is unique and special, because you can climb into the cave behind it and look out through the falling water to the large pool surrounded by mossy logs and rocks. The Upper Falls are a stunning series of cascades viewed from a platform.
The pier is the perfect place for a stroll, to set up, relax and catch some fish (chat to a local and see what they are catching, maybe some snapper or squid), or in winter, you may even spot a migrating whale!
When was the last time you saw that really iconic Great Ocean Road view? Teddys Lookout is the perfect spot to take in the glory of the winding road and see where St George River empties out and the surf breaks in the ocean. You can even grab a good old Great Ocean Road selfie while you’re there.
Take a moment away from the hustle and bustle and revel in rocky pools and opulent, shady fern gullies. The St George River track follows two river crossings, displaying fairy garden-esc views of towering eucalyptus. A moderate 2.7km walk one way, usually taking an hour.
Blow off some steam at this adventure park amongst the trees. Home to the Shockwave Zip Coaster (Australia’s most extreme zip line), epic ropes courses and the treetop canopy circuit; experience nature supercharged. Live Wire Park has a fun level to suit everyone, but we recommend you give it all a go, You’ll definitely leave with a smile on your face!
You can easily spend half a day perusing the shops on Mountjoy Parade, whether it’s fashion, shoes, homewares, books, gifts, you won’t be left short.
Dive into Lorne’s illustrious food culture and be blown away by our local flair for fresh harvest and tasty meals. Make sure you grab a ‘cuppa’ and chill out at one of Lorne’s many intricate cafes too. Our top shots to treat yourself and dine in at are:
Ipsos or Salonika if you love greek food, you won’t go hungry in Lorne. Ipsos and Salonika are doing it right and both well worth a visit. Both beautiful and welcoming places to dine in, the food, coffee and wine will leave you wanting to visit Greece.
If the sun is out and the ocean is looking inviting, it’s time to hire a board or a SUP and get out there. There are a few places around that you can hire all your gear from, like Go Ride A Wave (at HAH Lornebeach cafe) or the Lorne Surf Shop. If you pop into HAH Lornebeach you can even hire a selection of beach games like cricket or giant jenga!
Lorne is the perfect place to set up for a while and explore the surrounds which are only a short drive away. Head into the glorious Otways for more walks and waterfalls, pop over to Aireys Inlet to get your dose of history at the lighthouse (or a meal by the open fire at the Aireys Pub), grab a coffee and watch some local surfers at Fairhaven or spend the day exploring the Otway Coast Hamlets and spotting wildlife in the stunning towns of Separation Creek, Wye River and Kennett River.
Lorne is known as where the forest meets the sea and it really is a mix of all our favourite parts of the Great Ocean Road.
